Hello
~,
Digital Color Dominates
(Excerpts from Digital
Color Dominates by Courtney E. Howard, April
2003)
The demand for digital color printing continues its pattern
of strong growth.
Today’s volatile
economic and political climates notwithstanding, perhaps nothing is
gaining more attention than digital color printing. Indeed, few if
any technologies in the graphics arts industry are experiencing
growth comparable to that of digital color printing. Its present
popularity is as undeniable as its flexibility. It is not only
finding a home in a growing variety of environments, but also
successfully performing a wider array of applications.
The
Appeal: A major force behind the increased demand for digital color
printing, color has been proven to garner attention and contribute
to increased response rates, especially when coupled with variable
data. “The overriding advantage to digital color printing is how
well color helps you communicate,” admits Mark Pollack, Savin’s vice
president of product marketing and support. “Today, people are
overloaded with information. How do you distinguish yourself and
your document? Color can really help, and that’s part of the reason
we see so much interest in color.”
“I definitely
think digital color printing increases the retention of a message
that the user reads.” agrees Joyce Virnich, vice president of
marketing at Oce-USA Inc. She takes the impact of color even a step
further, saying, “I believe it also increases the understanding of a
message because it focuses attention on the key points.” Whatever
the reason, color is a boon to marketing efforts.
Color is but one
of the beneficial characteristics of digital printing. “The most
important benefit is increasing the effectiveness of marketing
campaigns,” according to Mike Mello, HP regional category manager of
the Indigo Division. “It’s important that marketing directors in
enterprise companies spend their budget dollars in more effective
ways, resulting in higher ROT.” With digital color printing, he
explains, enterprise companies and the marketing agencies that
represent them can produce more targeted communications, collateral,
and point-of-sale materials to promote brand both locally and
globally.
Driving
Demand: Heightened interest in and demand for digital color printing,
combined with the ready availability of more affordable and easy to
use solutions, are brining about a sea of change in the technology
industry. A growing number of corporations, organizations, and
nontraditional customer are reaping the rewards of digital color
devices. Do-it-yourselfers are saving cash and gaining control over
print jobs by bringing digital color printing in-house.
“On-demand
digital color printing is beginning to erode traditional printing,”
Mello continues. He attributes the trend to a majority of businesses
looking to reduce spending on large inventories with just-in-time
printing. “Marketing departments want the ability to respond with
more relevance to a changing demographic market with database driven
variable printing.”
Business
Benefits: Print service providers and corporations alike can take
advantage of the present and future demand for digital color
printing. Through the use of digital color presses and color laser,
multifunctional, and inkjet printers, professionals can parlay the
growing interest in color, variable, on-demand, and just-in-time
printing into increased revenue and new profit
centers.

Interesting Tidbits;
Inkjet Printers
Your inkjet cartridge contains much more than ink—it contains
an integrated circuit, much like a mini-computer, precisely routing
signals to the correct ink nozzles with exact timing. This is
important because of what is actually going on inside that
cartridge. The cartridge puts ink on your page by creating 40,000
“boiling points” per second, each producing heat up to seven times
hotter than the sun for 2 millionths of a second. These boiling
points push ink from over 400 nozzles in your cartridge onto your
printed page. All of this takes precise instructions delivered at
even faster speeds, to ensure delivery of that perfect printed page.

Ken Colburn writes in
the October 2, 2003 edition of Phoenix360.com:
The inkjet
printer business model is becoming a 'consumables' driven one that
has taken a page from the razor blade business. Sell razors cheap
and charge more for the blades.
Most
manufacturers make the majority of their money on the consumables
such as ink cartridges and special paper, which is why we are
starting to see a large number of sub $100 printers.
Several studies
have been done on the actual cost of ownership on inkjet printers
and in most cases the highest cost per page was in the lowest price
printers. Many provide less ink (in some cases half the ink!) in a
cartridge that looks the same, so you end up buying them twice as
often. In some cases, an inexpensive printer can cost twice as much
to use over a 2-year period because of the small amount of ink in
the cartridges.

 Spotlight:
Department Profile, Accram's NOC
Team
Have
you ever called Accram for technical support and wondered who
you were talking to?

|
Well, meet the guys
that staff our NOC (Network Operations Center). These are the guys
that answer all the incoming support calls for internet service,
kiosk installation and support, email problems, and basic end user
questions. They also are responsible for the 7x24 monitoring of our
RLM (Remote Management) Contracts, all Internet Connectivity,
designing and installing new client networks, and of course,
Accram’s in house network.
The team is housed in a
highly secure area within Accram. Access to this area can only be
gained by with a secure access code. From here, the team can monitor
networks, reprogram routers and even check server status – anywhere
in the country!
Gene Head, the department
manager, has been with Accram, Inc for 20 years. Joe, the new kid on
the block, is the latest addition to the team, and brings the
necessary skill set needed for network support. Jonathan and Josue
are the friendly voices that perform most of the end user support (a
sometimes difficult and certainly stressful task). Currently,
Jonathan and Josue are supporting hundreds of Internet users,
assisting with numerous kiosk installations nationwide, and
providing all the support for our Zaplink and Cricket Kiosk users.
All of these gentlemen maintain the certifications necessary that
allow us to support all the various networks that our clients
have.
If you
are interested in learning more about our network services, or if
you would like a tour of or NOC, just click on the link below and
